Indulge in the sweet, rich, and decadent delight of a classic butter tart. This beloved Canadian pastry, featuring a flaky crust filled with a gooey, buttery, brown sugar filling, is best enjoyed fresh but can be stored to savor its deliciousness for longer.
Storage Time
Butter tarts are best enjoyed within 2-3 days when stored at room temperature, up to 5-7 days in the refrigerator, and can be frozen for up to 2-3 months.
Temperature
Store at room temperature in a cool, dry place, or refrigerate at 0–4°C (32–40°F) for extended freshness.
Freezing
Butter tarts freeze exceptionally well, preserving their delightful texture and flavor. Wrap individual tarts tightly in plastic wrap, then place them in an airtight freezer-safe container or heavy-duty freezer bag. To thaw, unwrap the tarts and let them come to room temperature for about 1-2 hours. For a slightly crisper crust, you can briefly warm them in a low oven (around 150°C/300°F) for a few minutes after thawing.
Signs of Spoilage
- A sour or rancid smell emanating from the filling or crust.
- Visible mold growth, which can appear as fuzzy spots of various colors (green, white, black).
- A sticky, overly soft, or mushy texture in the crust, indicating moisture absorption or spoilage.
