Freezing
Yes, opened canned peas can be frozen to extend their shelf life. First, drain the peas thoroughly to remove excess liquid. For best results, spread the drained peas in a single layer on a baking sheet and flash freeze for 1-2 hours until solid. Then, transfer the frozen peas to a freezer-safe bag or an airtight container, ensuring to remove as much air as possible to prevent freezer burn. They can be stored in the freezer for up to 6 months. To use, you can add them directly to cooked dishes from frozen or thaw them in the refrigerator overnight.
Signs of Spoilage
- For unopened cans, watch for any signs of a bulging or leaking can, significant dents along the seams, or rust, which indicate potential spoilage or contamination.
- A sour, off-putting, or metallic smell emanating from the peas or their liquid is a strong indicator that they have spoiled and should be discarded.
- Any visible mold growth on the surface of the peas or in the liquid, or a slimy, mushy texture, means the peas are no longer safe to consume.
- Discoloration, such as a dull, brownish, or unusually dark green hue, suggests that the peas have lost their freshness and quality.
