Deliciously tender and flavorful chicken carnitas, slow-cooked to perfection, are a versatile ingredient for tacos, burritos, and more. Proper storage is key to maintaining their succulent texture and savory taste.
Storage Time
3–4 days in the refrigerator, up to 2–3 months in the freezer.
Temperature
Store refrigerated cooked chicken carnitas at or below 4°C (40°F).
Freezing
To freeze chicken carnitas, allow them to cool completely. Portion them into airtight containers or heavy-duty freezer bags, removing as much air as possible to prevent freezer burn. For best quality, consume within 2–3 months. Thaw frozen carnitas overnight in the refrigerator or use the defrost setting on your microwave. Reheat thoroughly on the stovetop or in the oven until steaming hot.
Signs of Spoilage
- A sour or off odor that is distinctly unpleasant.
- A slimy or sticky texture on the surface of the meat.
- Visible mold growth, which can appear as fuzzy patches of various colors.
