Fresh banana squash, also known as a winter squash, boasts a vibrant orange flesh and a sweet, nutty flavor perfect for roasting, baking, or pureeing into delicious soups and pies. Its thick rind makes it a fantastic candidate for long-term pantry storage, ensuring you have this versatile ingredient on hand for seasonal cooking.
Storage Time
Up to 3 months in a cool, dark pantry; 1-2 weeks in the refrigerator once cut.
Temperature
Ideal pantry storage is between 10–15°C (50–59°F). Refrigerate cut squash at 0–4°C (32–39°F).
Freezing
Banana squash freezes beautifully, preserving its flavor and texture for future culinary adventures. Cook or roast the squash until tender, then cool completely. Puree the flesh or cut into cubes, portion into airtight containers or freezer bags, and freeze for up to 12 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator or gently reheat from frozen.
Signs of Spoilage
- Soft or mushy spots on the rind.
- Mold growth, especially around the stem or any cuts.
