Fresh sweet yams, also known as sweet potatoes, are a nutritious and versatile root vegetable perfect for roasting, baking, or mashing. Proper storage ensures their delightful sweetness and firm texture are preserved for your culinary creations.
Storage Time
Store fresh sweet yams in a cool, dark pantry for up to 2-3 weeks. Once cooked, they can be refrigerated for 3-4 days.
Temperature
Ideal pantry storage temperature is between 10-15°C (50-59°F). Avoid refrigeration for raw yams as it can negatively affect texture and flavor.
Freezing
Sweet yams freeze exceptionally well, especially when cooked. To freeze, bake or boil them until tender, then cool completely. Mash or cube them, place in airtight freezer bags or containers, and freeze for up to 6-12 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator or gently reheat from frozen. Freezing raw yams is not recommended as their texture will become mushy upon thawing.
Signs of Spoilage
- Soft or mushy spots
- Mold growth (fuzzy or discolored patches)
- Unpleasant, fermented, or sour odor
