Israeli couscous, also known as pearl couscous, is a delightful pasta product made from semolina flour. Its unique toasted flavor and chewy texture make it a versatile ingredient for salads, side dishes, and main courses, absorbing sauces beautifully.
Storage Time
Uncooked: Up to 2 years in pantry. Cooked: 3–4 days in fridge.
Temperature
Store uncooked Israeli couscous in a cool, dry place, ideally between 15-20°C (59-68°F). Refrigerate cooked Israeli couscous at 0-4°C (32-40°F).
Freezing
Cooked Israeli couscous freezes remarkably well. Allow it to cool completely, then portion it into airtight containers or freezer bags. For best quality, consume within 2-3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator or gently reheat in a saucepan with a splash of water or broth to restore moisture.
Signs of Spoilage
- A musty or rancid odor emanating from the uncooked grains.
- Visible signs of mold or insect infestation in the pantry storage.
- A slimy or mushy texture and sour smell in cooked Israeli couscous that has been refrigerated.
