Organic alfalfa sprouts are delicate, nutrient-rich greens prized for their mild, slightly nutty flavor and crisp texture. Proper storage is crucial to maintain their vibrant freshness and ensure food safety, as they are highly perishable. Keep these tender sprouts cool and dry to extend their shelf life and enjoy their delicate crunch in salads and sandwiches.
Storage Time
3–5 days in the refrigerator. Alfalfa sprouts are not suitable for pantry storage due to their high moisture content and perishability.
Temperature
Keep refrigerated at a consistent temperature between 0–4°C (32–40°F) to inhibit bacterial growth and preserve their delicate structure.
Signs of Spoilage
- Slimy Texture: If the sprouts feel slimy or sticky to the touch, rather than crisp and dry, they are beginning to spoil and should be discarded immediately.
- Off-Smell: A sour, musty, or strong unpleasant odor, distinct from their fresh, mild scent, indicates bacterial growth and spoilage.
- Discoloration: Fresh alfalfa sprouts are vibrant white with tiny green tips. Any significant yellowing, browning, or dark spots are clear signs that they are past their prime and no longer safe to eat.
- Mold Growth: Visible fuzzy white, green, or black mold on the sprouts or within the container is a definitive sign of spoilage and means they must be thrown out immediately.
