Gulab jamun, the classic Indian milk-solid-based sweet, paired with creamy ice cream, creates a delightful dessert experience. Proper storage is crucial to maintain the gulab jamun's soft texture and prevent the ice cream from melting or developing freezer burn. Enjoy this delicious combination at its best by following our storage guidelines.
Storage Time
1-2 days in the fridge (for gulab jamun), ice cream is best consumed immediately, but can last up to 2 months in the freezer if properly stored separately.
Temperature
Keep refrigerated at 4°C (40°F) or below. For frozen ice cream, maintain a temperature of -18°C (0°F) or below.
Freezing
While gulab jamun can be frozen, the texture may change slightly upon thawing, becoming softer. To freeze, place gulab jamun in an airtight container. Ice cream should be stored in a freezer-safe container, pressing plastic wrap against the surface to prevent ice crystals. Thaw gulab jamun in the refrigerator overnight. Note that the ice cream's texture will degrade upon refreezing, so it is best to consume it directly from the freezer.
Signs of Spoilage
- Sour or fermented smell from the gulab jamun.
- Hard or crystallized texture in the gulab jamun.
- Visible mold growth on the gulab jamun.
- Ice cream developing a grainy texture or freezer burn.
- Significant color change in either the gulab jamun or ice cream.
