Indulge in the creamy delight of a homemade custard tart, a classic pastry featuring a rich, smooth egg custard baked within a crisp, buttery crust. Perfect for any occasion, this sweet treat is best enjoyed fresh but can be stored to extend its deliciousness.
Storage Time
3–4 days in the refrigerator, up to 1 month in the freezer (unbaked or baked)
Temperature
Keep refrigerated at or below 4°C (40°F) once baked and cooled.
Freezing
Custard tarts freeze exceptionally well, both baked and unbaked. For baked tarts, allow them to cool completely, then wrap them tightly in plastic wrap followed by a layer of aluminum foil or place them in an airtight freezer-safe container. Unbaked tarts can be frozen in their tart tins, covered similarly. To thaw, refrigerate overnight. Baked tarts may lose some crispness in the crust after freezing and thawing; reheating briefly in a moderate oven (around 150°C/300°F) can help restore texture.
Signs of Spoilage
- A sour or off smell emanating from the custard.
- Visible mold growth on the surface of the custard or crust.
- A watery or curdled texture in the custard, indicating separation.
