Delightful and tangy goat cheese, also known as chèvre, is a versatile ingredient perfect for salads, spreads, and baked dishes. Proper storage is key to preserving its delicate flavor and creamy texture.
Storage Time
Unopened: up to 2 weeks past sell-by date in fridge. Opened: 7–10 days in fridge. Soft goat cheese: 5–7 days. Harder aged goat cheese: up to 2 weeks.
Temperature
Keep refrigerated at 0–4°C (32–40°F).
Freezing
Goat cheese can be frozen, but its texture may become crumbly and drier upon thawing, making it best suited for cooked dishes rather than eating plain. Wrap the cheese tightly in plastic wrap, then in a layer of aluminum foil or place it in a freezer-safe bag. To thaw, place the frozen cheese in the refrigerator for 24–48 hours. Avoid refreezing once thawed.
Signs of Spoilage
- A sour or ammonia-like smell.
- Visible mold growth (any color other than the intended rind).
- Slimy or sticky texture.
- Off-putting discoloration.
